Growing up horse-crazy in Santa Barbara, Katie Upton always had horses wandering around the yard. Making paintings and drawings of them was a natural expression of her fascination with and love for these great animals.
Katie returned to horse imagery while working toward her Masters of Fine Arts at UC Santa Barbara in the late 80's. Those early mature works, in conté and charcoal on paper, were both huge and hugely successful. The Horse as subject and muse has been the focus of her work ever since.
Color, light and the vibrant energy Katie introduces through her draftsmanship and compositions are major themes in her art. She works from both observation and memory, seeking to refine her understanding of the massive presence of these creatures and her ability to communicate that visually.
Widely recognized for her striking, large-scale original oil paintings, Katie also creates smaller "portrait" pieces, mixed-media images on paper, limited edition gicleé prints and posters, and has completed numerous commissioned works. Her paintings and prints are on view in galleries in California, Colorado and Vermont, and have been exhibited in dozens of group and solo shows. Katie's work is held in private collections throughout the United States, as well as in Europe and Asia.
And yes...Katie's horses are still out there, wandering around the yard.
Katie's interest in thoroughbred racing has led her creative vision to the immortal Secretariat. This collection of expressive compositions of the champion moved owner Penny Chenery to comment, "Katie Upton captures the soul of a horse like no other".
