  In 1999, Secretariat became the first Thoroughbred to be honored with his own United States Postal stamp. This was a significant moment for the sport of horse racing as it further demonstrated the importance and appeal of Secretariat as an American icon and a part of our nation's history. During this 50th Anniversary celebration of Big Red and his 1973 Triple Crown championship, we are delighted to open up the Secretariat Archives vault and offer a limited inventory of these original collectible keepsakes which made their national debut nearly a quarter century ago. The scarce, eye-catching 1 1/8" square stamp features the iconic portrait of Secretariat in his blue and white Meadow Stable blinkers as originally portrayed on the June 11, 1973 TIME magazine cover. The official USPS Secretariat Stamp was released as one of the featured stamps comprising a varied 15-piece sheet set as part of the Postal Service's “Celebrate the Century” collectible stamp series. The 70s are duly represented with the most famed historical sights, scenes, and stories from the decade. The particular stamps being made available here were acquired in the fall of 1999 at Churchill Downs as part of a multi-city promotional tour for the stamp series that included appearances by members of the Meadow Stable team. The Churchill Downs event represented one of the rare opportunities where the Secretariat Stamp could be purchased individually, as opposed to their typical sale that required the purchase of the entire 70s decade sheet set, making this singular offering even more special. Each Secretariat Stamp in our archive collection is in pristine mint condition, having been kept in protected storage since their initial 1999 acquisition, and actually retains its original 33-cent designated mailing value.
